Apex Legends' Niche Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

Respawn Entertainment have an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Fans of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when the Amped season launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Mantle Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a burst of propulsion when scaling ledges and walls. According to lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of Apex Legends for quite a while, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or tournaments. This season, Respawn simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to execute these advanced speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in the game for some time, but executing it requires skill to pull off and a player would never know it [is in the game] without external guides," the designer explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify the timing to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, opening up the feature and introducing fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

Why make a previously obscure technique available to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan says developers aims for gamers to feel powerful — even those who are new.

"Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we examined at other games, looked at what the community execute, and we said, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer explains. "Since currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to access — it requires to change controls and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'What if we make a polished implementation?'"

The Amped Update Movement Focus

Mobility is largely the central theme in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will boost users upward faster than it used to. Her defensive walls feature overhead protection and capability to grant speed boosts to those nearby. But the spotlight is on aerial this Legend receiving the most attention now, with multiple tweaks applied to make her more potent, quicker, and deadlier.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that her moment is here," says Legend designer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been dominant previously, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. This presented an ideal chance for us to revisit multiple elements [of her kit] and sort of bring her back to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead says the team assessed all her skills and implemented some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves regenerates much quicker, allowing the player to spend more time in the air. Now she won't take damage from her own Missile Swarm, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches teammates skyward for repositioning or retreat — now takes reduced delay to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that users can choose to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her ultimate activation.

"Her jet pack fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead says.

Map Changes

Additionally, the lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. The developers state the game Season 27 is all about providing gamers the resources required to compete in matches.

"Really, we examined the game's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," says principal designer Josh Mohan.
